10 Tips To Get Your Child Outside!

Richard Louv author of “Last Child in the Woods” gives us 10 tips on how to get your child outside to play and get involved in the environment.

1. Keep a “wonder bowl.” Kids fill their pockets with acorns, rocks and leaves. Empty those pockets into a bowl, so kids can linger over their treasures.
2. Camp in the backyard.
3. Go harvesting. Take kids to pick apples, blueberries or corn.
4. Adopt a tree. Take pictures of your favorite tree in different seasons and around different family events. How does it change?
5. Got dirt? Let little kids dig with plastic shovels and pails.
6. Go birding – urban or suburban, rural or wilderness. Who are your feathered neighbors?
7. Adopt the “sunny day rule.” When the sun’s out, unplug. (Works for rainy days, too.)
8. Engage grandparents. Who has better memories of playing outside?
9. Revive old traditions. Collect lightning bugs, leaves and stones.
10. Be a cloudspotter. Go “clouding” – no equipment required.

Now turn off the TV and get out there or you’re grounded, mister!!!

This is my favorite month of the year. Cooler weather brings with it a heightened sense of anticipation for the holidays to come. We love, love, love Halloween and this year is super exciting for us because we will be making our first-ever haunted house! Well…partial house. Haunted garage/dining room/deck, which all conveniently connect in kind of a loop entering the garage and exiting the back gate.

My 11-yr-old son is in a frenzy, making a checklist, a shopping list, a blueprint, downloading videos of other haunted houses on You Tube, walking me through to show me where he wants everything. I know, right? I should get him to write my business plan. I am excited for him, because he had to get braces a month ago and I was worried he would be disappointed about not getting to eat most of his Halloween candy this year, but this will be way more fun for him than trick-or-treating!

So…if you have any trick-or-treaters in the Windsor Hill/Indigo Ridge neighborhood this year, stop by and check it out!

NORTH CHARLESTON ‘BEAUTIFUL PLACES’ PHOTOGRAPH CONTEST CALL FOR ENTRIES

The City of North Charleston and Keep North Charleston Beautiful invite photographers from all levels of experience to submit their entries for the North Charleston “Beautiful Places” Photograph Contest. Photograph submissions should reflect the locations throughout North Charleston that capture the charm and beauty of the area.

Submissions will be accepted between January 7, 2008 and August 31, 2008. Winners will be determined based on the content and quality of their entries. A cash prize of $200 will be awarded to the first place winner, $100 to the second place winner and $50 to the third place winner. Winning entries will be displayed online at www.keepnorthcharlestonbeautiful.org.

GREEN TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Its that time again when everyone is out purchasing gifts for loved ones. LEEP has found some new ways to help keep your holidays green. 1.Consider not buying anything. Instead, write someone a poem, draw them a picture, cook them a dinner (nothing better than a home-cooked meal).

2. Make your gifts. Bake up some bread or cookies, make a necklace from beads, design your own coupon book of tasks that you know someone will enjoy.

3. If you do shop, shop local. Purchase items from the local area. Many cities have wonderful artists in a variety of fields. Call your local business directory to find artists.

4. Hold a zero waste holiday party. Havefriends bring their own cups and plates, use linen tablecloths and napkins and recycle all garbage.

5. Give gifts of love. Send a donation to a charity in honor of your family or friends. This will honor them forever.

6. Give cards that were not made from trees. Purchase recycled paper or use your email to send cards.
